Tom Vernon: Fat Man on a Bicycle

My old friend Tom Vernon has died aged 74. I was honoured to be asked by his wife Sally to write his obituary for the Guardian. Here it is – http://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/sep/18/tom-vernon

I discovered Toms books a couple of years ago, and found them truly engaging in a so very human way. I’m 46, so missed his peak, but I’d just like to say that you were very lucky to be friends with a man of such obvious quality. I shall be cycling his route through France next year with his book in my pannier…the very thought of riding the same route whilst reviewing his commentary makes me smile. If you have any contacts with Toms family, please pass on to them my appreciation of his work.

    Kind regards

I contacted Tom probably back in 2006 0r 2007 because I loved the Fat Man series so much and was hoping the BBC could be persuaded to release them on disc. We carried on an e-mail correspondence for some time that I enjoyed thoroughly – what a delightful person he was. I started fighting fracking in early 2008 and my conversation with him came to an end as I became immersed in that struggle. So sorry to not have been in touch with him recently and so sorry he’s gone; my heartfelt condolences to his wife. I’ll never forget him. He was a treasure.
