As a fan of short stories and science fiction, I read The Machine Stops as a teenager in the seventies. I remember being repelled by the "blob" that was Vashti, but not really being overly engaged until decades later when the arrival of the internet sent me back to the story to make sure I'd remembered it properly and marvel that E M Forster could have written it almost a century before. No one I've talked to has ever really appreciated the prescience of the story.........maybe because I tend to bring it up at parties........ In the mid seventies, I had the good fortune to have you as tutor in my first year. I've enjoyed catching up with your continuing crusades.
